4 Reasons to Trek Peru


Oh the Andes mountains – beautiful, peaceful and full of mysteries. The Andes were home to the one of the world’s richest tribes, the Incas. Because of this people travel from all over the world to walk the paths they once walked to arrive at their hidden city in the clouds – Machu Pichu.

Trekking in Peru is a memorable experience plus you can lose between 4-6kg just from 5 days trekking! Sounds like a pretty sweet deal – fun and fitness! Yes it is hard, challenging and backbreaking but it is also rewarding, fulfilling and exciting!

One of the team members here at made the venture all the way to Peru to trek the Salkantay trail just to bring you the four reasons that you must trek in Peru.

Firstly let’s start with some trekking tips in Peru:

  • The altitude is going to affect you so make sure you acclimatize for at least 3 days before starting any trek.
  • Invest in some good trekking shoes – preferably the shoes not boots.
  • Take a flashlight.
  • Don’t book your trek online, instead book it when you arrive. Treks leave everyday and it’s cheaper this way.
  • Take warm clothes, including a pair of thermals, it’s always cold there.
  • Take a camera and an extra battery.
  • The BEST thing to take is an open mind – do crazy things and step out of your comfort zone, you will thank yourself later.

Now let’s get trekking! The Salkantay trek is one of the most popular treks in Peru. It is a 5-day 4-night trek through the Andes that ends at Machu Pichu. Yes you will be sleeping in tents and there is no hot shower or beds, just sleeping bags. I hope you still have an open mind and I didn’t lose you at the word ‘tent’! On the other hand though the food is good and the company is better. Let’s take a look at the reasons why you should trek!

1) The Scenery Will Blow You Away
The Andes are known for being spectacular! You will see snow capped peaks, jungles, forests, waterfalls, wild animals and of course Machu Pichu! Waking up each day to mountains that cover half the sky is just mind blowing and going to bed with the stars brighter than you have ever seen is inspiring.

2) The Company is Fun
Trekking allows you to meet people you would not normally meet and learn about a culture so different from yours. You get to hear crazy adventure stories and inspiring tales. You never know who you are going to meet on a journey like this one but whoever crosses your path will leave you with something to think about.

3) You Lose Weight
There is really no better holiday than one where you get to lose weight and have fun. On the Salkantay trek you trek for around 4 to 8 hours per day causing you to burn a lot of calories. At the same time though you can still eat whatever you feel like and you will still lose weight. Most people lose around 4 to 6kg in just 5 days of trekking.

Trekking in Peru is simply an experience of a lifetime. For most people it is on their bucket list but they just let it sit on the list.
