I haven’t been running too terribly much this summer as I don’t particularly like running in the heat. But it has been calling me, so I decided to get back into the swing of things with a fun 5K run with a girlfriend.
We chose the Radiant Run. It was short, it was on the beautiful UBC campus, and it was in the dark!
We decked out in our glow sticks and joined the group at the start line waiting for the darkness to show off our “Radiant” glow. A popular radio station got us pumped up and after a quick warm up, we were off!
The energy was great and was kept at a positive level with music and glowing dancers every little while along the route. Santa even greeted us in a globe-lit treed area!
My only critique would be on a safety level. While there was ambient light, there were a few spots that I thought could have been a bit better marked. We passed a few people that succumbed to lifted sidewalk squares that got overlooked in the low light. We saw a girl stopped hard by a bench that she simply didn’t see, and I myself just missed a waist high post when the girl in front of me dodged out of the way at the last minute as well.
A friend noted that it didn’t sound like a good race for the clumsy or those with poor night vision. As I fit into BOTH categories, I feel lucky I came home in one unbroken piece. That being said, I would totally do it again! What girl doesn’t like dressing up and donning glow sticks?? I hope a bunch more will join us next year!
