Supplements 101

supplements

Taste this, try that, that’s delicious, I feel like something sweet, salty, savory. These days human beings focus on their taste buds rather than their health buds. It’s all about ‘what I feel like’ rather than ‘what is good for me’. This is leading to most people being deficient in a number of minerals, enzymes, vitamins and nutrients. This is where supplements come into it. Yes I could say ‘as long as you are eating a balanced diet you don’t need supplements’, but let’s face it, even with the best of intentions many of us fall short. A lot of people could benefit supplementing what we are not getting enough of with a pill or powder. So here’s a list of essential supplements that can help maintain health, a healthy weight and a healthy system. Also remember that if you have any health issues then speak to your doctor before deciding to take any supplements.

Multivitamin:
A multi is the essential gap-filler. Whatever you are lacking it will back up. A multi contains all the essential vitamins you need to maintain overall health. This is a great all round supplement that should be taken with breakfast.

Supergreens:
Hate your green veggies? Then supergreens are right for you. One scoop of supergreen powder is equivalent to 10 serves of vegetables. Supergreens also alkalize the body, which in tern improves the immune systems, helps nutrient absorption and increases energy levels.

Fish oil:
Sick of cracking or stiff joints? Well fish oil is your remedy. Fish oil is an essential fatty acid. It has been proven to provide vitality to hair and skin, lubricate joints and improve brain function.

Magnesium/calcium complex:
Remember mum said ‘drink your milk for strong bones’? While milk is a strong provider of calcium, the cup of milk you put in your cereal in the morning is not enough. And with many adults skipping breakfast (tsk! tsk!), they don’t even get that. So supplementing to help with bone health, bone strength and bone density, could be a good idea.

Vitamin C:
Everyone knows that if you are getting sick then vitamin C is the supplement to take! But studies have actually not really shown this to be true. HOWEVER it CAN do so much more! This antioxidant for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It helps the body make collagen, an important protein used to make skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is needed for healing wounds, and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth. It also helps the body absorb iron from certain sources.*

B12:
Want to maintain your energy levels throughout the day? Then B12 is right for you. B12 is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. I know that sounds fancy but it’s just code for energy consistency.

If you’re not sure what to take then speak to your doctor and get a blood test. A blood test should show your deficiency. You could also go to a naturopath and get a Hemaview, which is a live blood analysis. They will also be able give you an a good idea what you are lacking.
