Tidy Pantry, Healthy Diet?

I was recently chagrinned by a neighbourhood 9 year old who, when standing in the pantry door with my daughter, remarked “Whoa! What happened in here!”. Now this didn’t surprise me, as I knew it was messy, and was waiting “for a good time” to get the job done.

Several weeks passed. Then it happened. I got frustrated. Frustrated that I couldn’t find the things I needed. Frustrated that I wasn’t even completely sure what was in there. It was time.

A bag of garbage, a box of recycling, and several compost bucketfuls later, it was done! I now have an organized, clean pantry.

But not only do I now have a healthy pantry I can be proud of, I also found a side benefit. I noticed in the past that every time the kids and I would go to find a snack, inevitably some sort of junk food would appear. You see, these were the most easily found items that disrupt the healthy eating plans. Now that it is tidy, not only are there less sugar filled items available, but the healthy things are easily accessible as well. Dried fruit, nuts, chick peas for a quick salad – are all preferable to those horrible chocolate marshmallow wheels we keep there for the kids and eat just because they are there.

BONUS: The first couple of times I did the drone walk to the panty, I even came away empty handed since when faced with healthy choices I realized that I wasn’t really hungry…just wanting to eat without thinking.

Now onto the freezer!
